A thousand trees for a healthier future: Menarini takes the lead on World Asthma Day

Menarini Group has a long-standing commitment to supporting patients with asthma and has played a key role in raising awareness about the condition and its associated risks, as well as in promoting preventive measures.

In keeping with this, on May 2nd, Menarini will be celebrating World Asthma Day, promoted by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), further reinforcing the company’s pledge to help asthmatic patients.

The purpose of the Florentine group is to raise awareness among patients with asthma; this includes emphasizing the importance of breathing well and paying attention to signals from the body. Additionally, it focuses on encouraging patients to adopt healthy lifestyles and adhere to therapy plans to effectively manage their condition.

Asthma is a condition that causes inflammation in the airways, resulting in symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), wheezing, and tightness in the chest. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 262 million people worldwide suffer from asthma. In some cases, asthma can lead to premature death and reduced quality of life, with around 455,000 deaths attributed to asthma annually.

This figure is especially concerning since many of these deaths may be prevented through effective adherence to therapies.

Asthma-related deaths can be correlated with inappropriate management of the disease, such as relying too much on drugs that only provide temporary relief rather than maintenance drugs and preventive behaviors.

Asthma is often thought of as an acute disease that “disappears” in the absence of symptoms and only reappears during episodes. However, it is actually a chronic condition that requires consistent medication to prevent exacerbations and improve lung function.

Temporary solutions are not enough, and patients need to be highly adherent to their prescribed therapeutic plan to manage the disease effectively. It is crucial to develop an individualized asthma control plan based on the type and frequency of attacks in each patient.

There are several good practices that can be adopted to improve the lives of people with asthma, including quitting smoking, protecting children from second-hand smoke, and avoiding exposure to substances that trigger attacks. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, patients can manage asthma better, and also prevent other chronic diseases. Living peacefully with asthma is possible, and medication coupled with healthy habits can lead to overall improvement in the patient’s quality of life.

Menarini Group’s commitment

On the occasion of World Asthma Day, Menarini Group has decided to plant 1000 new trees in collaboration with Treedom. This number holds great symbolic value as it is approximately equal to the number of people who die from asthma worldwide on a daily basis.

Through this initiative, the Menarini Group aims to reaffirm its commitment to creating more awareness about asthma, with the ultimate hope of a future where asthmatic patients can finally breathe freely.

Planting 1000 trees is just one step in Menarini Group’s commitment to improving the quality of air in the world. In fact, the Florentine pharmaceutical group had already initiated the Menarini Forest project, which saw over 10,000 trees planted.
This initiative aims to counteract climate change and the greenhouse effect by absorbing CO2, protecting biodiversity, and combating deforestation. It also supports agroforestry development plans that contribute to the environmental and food sustainability of small local farmer cooperatives.

Planting trees on World Asthma Day highlights the significance of breathing well and being mindful of the environment. Asthma patients face increased risks due to climate change, pollution, and shifts in pollination cycles caused by seasonal changes.

In line with this year’s theme for World Asthma Day chosen by the Global Initiative for Asthma, “Asthma Care for All“, Menarini is committed to providing specific recommendations for environmental sustainability by sharing concerns about planetary health with a high priority for the safety of all patients.

Therefore, the initiative to plant 1000 trees encompasses two fundamental themes of the Menarini Group’s mission: promoting people’s well-being and caring for the environment. This tangible effort is part of a larger sustainability plan integrated into Menarini’s business model and aims at ensuring long-lasting effects.
Menarini recognizes that respecting the planet and being forward-thinking are crucial for laying the foundation for sustainable development for future generations.
